- Egypt’s Vice President Mohamed Elbaradei resigned in protest over the attacks on pro Mohamed Morsi supporters in Cairo.

- The 39-member Indian Police team won a record breaking haul of 83 medals after participating in the World Police & Fire Games held at Belfast from 1 August to 10 August 2013. The medals include 48 Gold, 22 Silver and 13 Bronze Medals.
- Rafael Nadal of Spain defeated Canada's Milos Raonic 6-2 6-2 in the final of the men's Rogers Cup on 11 August 2013 in Montreal, Canada.
- The Rajya Sabha on passed Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2012, under which marriages solemnized in India irrespective of the religion of the persons getting married will have to be compulsorily registered.
- A major fire broke out on board INS Sindhurakshak at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. An explosion on board damaged the submarine. The fire was doused in time and prevented from spreading to other vessels docked in the vicinity.
- India won six medals at the 7th Asian Junior Wushu Championships which concluded in Manila, Philippines.
- Vinay Mittal, a former Indian Railway Traffic Service officer was appointed as a member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). He is the eighth member in the Commission.
