- The 5th India-China Strategic Dialogue was held in New Delhi.
- The United States deported Sandra Avila Beltran (52), a Mexican drug smuggler also known as Queen of the Pacific to the Mexican authorities after completion of her jail term in the country. She has been deported to Mexico, where she was taken into custody to face separate charges of money laundering.
- Former Pakistani military ruler Pervez Musharraf was indicted by an anti-terrorism court in the 2007 assassination of ex-premier Benazir Bhutto. Musharraf was charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder and facilitation of murder.
- The Indian Air Force (IAF) landed its C-130J Super Hercules Transport Plane at the recently-activated airstrip of Daulat Beg Oldie Sector in Ladakh.
- The Earth Overshoot Day for the year 2013 was observed on 20 August 2013. The day is an approximate calendar date on which humanity exhausted nature's budget for the year. The date changes every year according to the consumption of resources.
- Kush Kumar of India won gold in Men’s Singles Squash at the second Asian Youth Games in Nanjing, China. This is the India’s first gold in and overall fourth medal at the second Asian Youth Games.
- Usain Bolt of Jamaica equalled the world record of highest golds after winning the 4x100m relay at the World Athletics Championships at Moscow, Russia. By winning the 4x100m gold medal Usain Bolt’s secured his eighth gold. This was his third gold medal at World Athletics Championships 2013 Moscow.
- Ratan Thiyam, the renowned theatre personality from Manipur, was appointed as the Chairperson of the National School of Drama Society by the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee.
- The Union Government of India banned duty-free import of flat screen televisions by people who travel through air. This move came after the Rupees fell below 63 levels against the US Dollar.
- Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar unveiled the statue of Nobel Laureate Dr. Norman Borlaug at New Delhi.
- The captain of the Indian Cricket Team, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, 31, was ranked at the 16th position in the recent Forbes list of highest-paid athletes. Dhoni’s earning stood at 31.5 million US dollar or 180 crore Rupees. The values were calculated between June 2012 and June 2013.
